Big Investigation Out Tomorrow; Catch Up On What You Missed
We save this newsletter for big news. To get every Hunterbrook Media story as soon as it comes out, we have an RSS feed you can follow here.
Our biggest story in months comes out tomorrow. It's about a company whose actions appear to have led to a tremendous amount of harm — and we’re looking forward to bringing it to light.
But that's not out until Monday!
So here is some of the Hunterbrook Media work you may have missed. As always, go to our website for full disclosures.
Most recently, we published a pair of articles on imminent FTC antitrust outcomes:
1) An investigation into mysteries surrounding the Albertsons-Kroger merger — which includes what we think is the answer to why SoftBank, a tech VC, is planning to spend $400 million buying grocery stores. (Hint: It doesn’t look like it’s to make sure worker pay goes up and grocery prices go down.)
2) A fun dive into the Tapestry-Capri fashion case, where the FTC is trying to define accessible luxury and investors are not buying their arguments…
And we’ve continued to publish reporting from under-covered areas across the world:
1) Logging Certification Suspended
The Forest Stewardship Council suspended the certification for timber logging near the uncontacted Mascho Piro tribe in the Peruvian Amazon. This came after a Hunterbrook investigation called out the FSC for granting the concession.
2) Miner Persisting Despite Cyanide Spill in Region
We brought attention to Snowline Gold Corporation's continued drilling in the Yukon, despite the local First Nation community suffering from a toxic cyanide spill at another mine on its Indigenous land."
3) Consequences For Toxic Smelter
In May, Hunterbrook published an investigation revealing runoff from the copper smelter owned by Dundee Precious Metals in Tsumeb, Namibia — bringing together on-the-ground reporting and OSINT. A few weeks ago, we revealed that Dundee, which had been attempting to offload the smelter to a Chinese miner, cut its sale price by more than half before completing the sale.
4) Zimbabwe’s Killer Mine
Dangerous practices at the Redwing “killer mine” in Zimbabwe have allegedly led to the deaths of over a hundred people since 2020. And earlier this year, 15 miners were reportedly trapped for days before being rescued. Now, it’s being taken over by a SPAC, with messy questions about what happens when a company tries to take back control of a mine that has been run by unregulated artisanal miners.
We’ll also send a full update at our sixth month mark in October — but from Hims to NuScale, VinFast to Nano Nuclear, Hunterbrook Media’s reporting continues to be one step ahead of the news.
We’re really looking forward to sharing our next big one with you tomorrow.
